Abstract We discuss the METEOR workflow management system that is intended to support complex workflow applications involving heterogeneous and legacy information systems and hardware/software environments, span multiple organizations, or require support for more dynamic processes, error handling and recovery. It provides several novel features including comprehensive graphical environment for building complex workflow applications, automatic code generation for enactment, and fully distributed enactment systems utilizing either Web or distributed object management (CORBA) based communication infrastructure. Collaborations with healthcare industry partners are integral to our work, and involves development of requirements, real world workflow application prototyping, and METEOR technology evaluation as part of trials conducted by the healthcare and industry partners. We discuss an example of the use of METEOR in prototyping state wide immunization tracking workflow application, a part of which is being deployed. Additional applications, including Clinical Trial Management, are being prototyped.
