Mini-Assignment: Recognizing Distributions

Assignment Day               Wednesday (evening): September 12, 2013 (assignment will updated until Assignment date, after that there will only be clarification updates)
Due Date: Wednesday: September 18 before class (hardcopy and email)

Format Email to TA see home page for address and cc Instructor
You will also need to hand in a Hardcopy of your Data Sheets

In this assignment you will causally explore different distributions of data - uniform, normal and logarithmic.

Question 1: Plot a histogram of the frequence of the numeric result of rolling a single die of 100 rolls and 10 trials using the =RAND function in excel. Describe the distribution (uniform, normal or logarithmic)?

Question 2: Plot a histogram of the frequence of the numeric results of rolling two dice of 100 rolls and 10 trials using the =RAND function in excel. Describe the distribution (uniform, normal or logarithmic)? [HINT: as a first step you will need to simulate all possible (36) combinations, e.g., the numeric result of 11 can be generated in two ways: 1st die 5, send die 6, and 1sst die 6 and second die 5 - so there is a theoretical probability of 2/36 to generate the numeric result of 11]. [HINT 2: use google to find out how to generate the histogram of generating the theoritical result, that may help you to configure you excel sheet]. Describe the distribution? (uniform, normal, logarithmic, Benford-esque or other)?.

Question 3: What is the distribution?
a) Grade distributions in a class?
b) Distribution of daily returns of stock prices?
c) Roulette Wheel Spins
