Hacking competitions, such as 'capture-the-flag' (CTF) games, are extreamly useful exercises to educate students the subjects of computer systems and security. iCTF and CSAW are two well-known examples for student participants. Of course they are just two out of many awesome CTF competitions (DEFCON, CODEGATE ...).
